When it comes to light pickup trucks, Toyota Hilux is a name to reckon with. Since its inception way back in 1968, the Hilux has been a popular choice with users in various markets for its durability, off-road ability and excellent features. With time, Toyota has equipped the model with newer features and technological upgrades. The same is true of Toyota Hilux 2017 as it features several enhancements to take on the growing pack of competitors.

The new 2017 Toyota Hilux is stylish and has a flair seen mostly in mainstream luxury SUVs but the ruggedness is there all right. It is still quite large in size. The 2017 model comes in Double-Cab, Single-Cab, and Extra-Cab configurations. You can also buy it as a Pick-Up or as a cab on chassis, based on needs. The new Hilux is both wider and longer than the earlier model. Upper trims get enough chrome accents on bumpers and body. You can opt for various types of 17 and 18-inch wheels.

The interior of Toyota Hilux 2017 looks classy with variable seating arrangements based on the build style you choose. The quality of materials used in the cabin is quite a top notch. You may feel the dashboard and instrument panel has been taken straight out of Toyota Auris.  The cabin also has some useful storage cubbies to keep small and midsized items.

The engine choices vary from one country to another, as is a case with most pickup trucks. The UK models get equipped with a 2.7-litre diesel four-cylinder engine which makes 180 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque. It is coupled with either a six-speed automatic gearbox or a six-speed manual transmission unit. In other countries a beefier 2.8-litre engine is available. Sadly the lack of a V8 engine makes the Hilux lose out to rivals like VW Amarok and Ford Ranger.  You get either 2WD or 4WD.

The engine is noisier and not very powerful but it is no slouch either. The handling is better than older models but you will not feel you are driving anything other than pickup truck after all. The bump and potholes are soaked better in this model, though.

No matter which build style you select, the Toyota Hilux 2017 has a payload capacity of 1,025 kg-1055 kg.  It is still behind what you get in rivals like Nisan Navara. The towing capacity maxes out at 3500 kgs-on par with most segment rivals.

Spec:

The Toyota Hilux 2017 is sold in 3 trims- Active, Icon, and Invincible. You also get a special Invincible X model which is aimed at luxury seeking buyers.

All models get features like heated door mirrors, cooled glovebox, Bluetooth and safety features like trailer sway assist, ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, Emergency Brake Assist and hill start to assist. In Icon trim, you also get 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, electric folding mirrors, reversing camera and privacy glass. In Invincible trim, you get the Keyless start, dual-zone climate control, LED headlamps, LED Daytime running lights and 18-inch alloys. It gets a safety kit which has Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning. In range-topping Invincible X trim, you get parking sensors, sat-nav, and special dual tone alloy wheels. The double cab models have ISOFIX child seat mountings.

Toyota Hilux 2017 – Price and Release Date:

The exact price of Toyota Hilux 2017 is not known. However, considering the pricing of 2016 range, it is likely the entry-level model will have a price tag of $25,000 or so. For top end Invincible X the price tag could be close to $40,000. Prices will vary based on build style and drive setup (2WD and 4WD). It is going to be made available for sale in late 2016.

Conclusion:

The Toyota Hilux 2017 is a decent contender in light pickup truck segment and it carries forward the legacy. The design has more flair now and interior looks classy. However, the ride quality is where the Hilux loses out to rivals like VW Amarok or even Nissan Navara. Its engine is not very powerful either. However, for an all rounder light truck that handles highway drives and of road trips with aplomb, you cannot go wrong with the new Hilux.
