Volkswagen, the legendary German car maker is known mostly for its lavish sedans and award winning SUV Crossovers across the world. However, the company decided to make inroads into Pickup truck segment a few years back and the result was the VW Amarok. Made by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the Amarok made its debut in 2010 and created a niche in the already crowded pickup truck segment. The range comprises of a double cab and single cab and the models come in either VW’s 4motion four-wheel drive or RWD. It is pitted against contenders like Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton. However, the Amarok is larger than these models. The Volkswagen Amarok 2017 comes with several new features and enhancements.
The exterior design updates are nice but the USP of 2017 VW Amarok is its powerful V6 diesel engine that meets Euro 6 norms. The cabin also gets some revamps.
Volkswagen Amarok 2017 – Design and Features:
The Amarok series may not have the rugged and aggressive looks of a Ram Rampage or Ford Raptor but touches of German craftsmanship are evident in styling. The Volkswagen Amarok 2017 also receives a minor facelift in exterior design. It comes equipped with new 20-inch wheels, bumpers, and new air vents. The new 2017 VW Amarok is characterized by improved LED daytime running lights and new bi-xenon headlights. It is likely to be sold in three trims: Start line, Highline, and Trendline. A special Aventura edition is likely to be launched but it may not be available in all markets. You can have wheel choices from 17 inches to 20 inches.
The cabin of Volkswagen Amarok 2017 looks classy and well designed, to say the least. The highlight of its cabin is the much touted ergoComfort front seats that come with 14-way adjustment and Nappa leather wrapping. Seating position is good, offering the driver excelled outwards visibility and the Servotronic speed-sensitive steering is also breeze to use. The cabin is also quite spacious and there are several storage compartments. The redesigned instrument panel is enticing and easy to use. Interior ergonomics is what you can expect in luxury sedans. The cargo tray is 1.55 meters long- nearly the category best.
Volkswagen Amarok 2017 – Powertrain:
Volkswagen has equipped the 2017 Amarok with a new engine for 2017. The 2.0-liter TDI engine is gone and it is replaced by a more powerful 3.0-liter TDI V6 engine with three output levels. This helps VW put the Amarok at top of midsize pickup segment and rival contenders cannot match in either acceleration or power output. It reaches 100 km/h from zero only in 7.9 seconds. The engine achieves maximum 224 hp and 550 Nm of torque. All engines are compliant with Euro 6 emissions standard. They are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission unit. For a diesel engine powered pickup, the noise remains well under control.
Based on equipment, Amarok’s payload capacity may exceed one ton. Maximum rated towing capacity is 3000 kg.
Volkswagen Amarok 2017 – Specs:
Even when you buy a pickup truck from VW stable, it is likely to be loaded with the latest technology and entertainment features. The Volkswagen Amarok 2017 does not disappoint in this department. Automatic Post-Collision Braking is standard across all trims. Its ‘Park Pilot’ parking assistance system aided by a ‘Rear View’ reversing camera makes maneuvering the vehicle in busy urban roads a cakewalk. There are hill descent control and tire pressure monitoring as well. A, it is somewhat unacceptable that a premium class pickup UTE misses out on safety feature like second-row airbags. Another glaring omission is a lack of radar cruise control.
The touch screen infotainment system is a joy to use and it offers excellent Smartphone integration. Availability of three 12V outlets and USB port placed in the center console is good for the geeks. The display screen at 6.3 inches may seem a tad small for some users, though.
Volkswagen Amarok 2017 – Price and Release Date:
Volkswagen will start selling Amarok in various markets in late 2016. VW has unveiled only German price for the 2017 Amarok. The rear-wheel drive Trendline version costs €25,720 while Amarok Aventura has a price tag of €41,376.
Overall, the Volkswagen Amarok 2017 retains its throne of the champion in high-end pickup segment. Also, refined and powerful engine and an excellent cabin keep it ahead of most rivals. A few missing safety features are not deal breakers.
